The Forgotten Word At Christmas

Dr. Warren W. Wiersbe | December 12, 1976

Selected highlights from this sermon

When we think of Christmas we often think of peace and joy, but we forget the word that underlies everything in the Christmas story: grace. God’s grace transcends any of the superficial or manufactured feelings of Christmas. When we accept God’s grace, He will forgive and enrich us because of Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross.

Transcripts for Dr. Wiersbe's sermons are forthcoming. Below is an outline of his message.

When people think of Christmas they think of peace and joy.

The best word to describe Christmas is rarely used: grace.

Grace underlies everything in the Christmas story.

Apart from the grace of God we will never have a deep or abiding experience with the Lord.

You can manufacture peace and joy, but you can’t manufacture grace.

God’s grace transcends any of the superficial or manufactured feelings of Christmas.

Three aspects of the grace of God:

  • The source of grace: God is rich.
    • Jesus is rich in His person because He is the eternal
    • Jesus is rich in His position because He is on the throne of the universe.
    • God is great and rich in His power, and He owns all things.
    • If we want to experience God’s grace, we must come to the Son.
  • The cost of grace: God became poor.
    • We can never deserve, earn, or merit God’s grace.
    • For God to share His grace with us, Jesus had to become poor by taking on a human body.
    • Jesus, the sovereign God, became a servant to sinners.
    • Jesus went from King to servant, from heaven to Earth, from Creator to creature, from the eternal to time, and from power to weakness.
    • The depths of poverty were reached when Jesus became sin for us on the cross.
    • Hell is eternal poverty.
  • The purpose of grace: to make us rich.
    • We are poor, wretched, blind, and naked without the grace of God.
    • We share the riches of Jesus’ person, position, power, and possessions.
    • God will supply all that we need in His riches and glory through Jesus Christ.

When we accept God’s grace He will forgive and enrich us.
