Tithing

A sermon from guest speaker Oscar Lowry.  “Will a man rob God? Yet ye have robbed me. But ye say, wherein have we robbed thee? In tithes and offerings. Ye are cursed with a curse, for ye have robbed me, even this whole nation. Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse that there may be meat in mine house and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven and pour you out a blessing that there shall not be room enough to receive it.”—Malachi 3:8–10 My theme for … Read More >

Cost Of Living

“…All things come of thee, and of thine own have we given thee…O Lord our God, all this store that we have prepared to build thee an house for thine holy name cometh of thine hand, and is all thine own”—1 Chronicles 29:14-16 Money can be a great asset or liability. The Bible says, “The love of money is the root of all evil,” and we might add, the proper use of money is the root of great good. Some men, like Abraham and Job, are rich and honest; others are rich because they are dishonest. Some are poor because … Read More >

Is Peter The Rock Upon Which The Church Is Built?

A sermon preached in The Moody Church by Dr. H.A. Ironside in reply to a radio sermon by Dr. Shean of Washington, D.C. “When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of man am? And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist: some, Elias: and others, Jeremias, or one of the prophets. He saith unto them, But who say ye that I am? And Simon Peter answered and said, “Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. And Jesus answered and … Read More >

Tithing

The Old Testament institutes tithing as an obligatory act of worship by God’s people. Israelite tithes supported the landless tribe of Levi and the priesthood of God (Numbers 18:25-32, Nehemiah 10:38). They also served the giver’s family and the nation’s disadvantaged (Deuteronomy 14:22-29).  This command of God was often abused or ignored (Malachi 3:8-10). As in the case with all visible acts of worship, self-righteousness cropped up among the Israelites who actually did tithe (Luke 18:12). Through the fulfilling work of the Messiah, New Testament believers are no longer obligated to perform the particulars of the Law. Tithing is never … Read More >

God's Jewels

Delivered at the Bible Conference at Cedar Lake last summer [1916] by Rev. Charles Inglis of London, England. “And they shall be mine, saith the LORD of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels.”—Malachi 3:17 You know the meaning of the word Malachi. It means “the messenger of Jehovah.” And what a God-sent message this must have been to Israel in their departure from Him! “You shall be mine, in that day when I make up my jewels.” An old writer that lived about four hundred years ago said this about jewels: They were procured at a … Read More >

The Coming Forerunner

“There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia; and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blameless, and they had no child, because that Elisabeth was barren, and they both were now well stricken in years. And it came to pass, that while he executed the priest’s office before God in the order of his course, according to the custom of the priest’s office, … Read More >

Don’t Fear Change

The older we become, the more difficult it is for us to face changes. We get our roots down deep and we don’t like them to be disturbed. The new fashions, the new ideas, and even new friends are a bit of a threat to us. We’re very comfortable in our own little world, and we see no reason why anything has to change. But you and I know that life just doesn’t stand still. Where there is life there must be growth, and where there is growth there must be change. The only things that stand still are things … Read More >

Cleaving To The Lord

“Then tidings of these things came unto the ears of the church which was in Jerusalem: and they sent forth Barnabas, that he sould go as far as Antioch. Who, when he came, and had seen the grace of God, was glad, and exhorted them all, that with purpose of heart they would cleave unto the Lord.” —Acts 11:22-23 The background and context of these verses is intensely interesting. Some years had elapsed since the glorious Pentecostal outpouring when the work of grace began in the city of Jerusalem. Our blessed Lord had instructed His disciples to begin there and … Read More >
