Discouragement

Many of the Friendship Club members know the easy way in but some of you do not know how readily you may get out of despondency. As a young Christian you came up against a devilish thing; devilish because Satan is the father of it,—discouragement. Do you not remember the delightful experiences of the first days of your Christian life? You were on the mountain top after coming out of the pit and miry clay of the past. The Bible was sweet. You ate it and relished it, and prayer was a great pleasure. To talk with people about their … Read More >

The Dangers Of Compromise

Messaged preached on Sunday morning, July 17, 1949 by The Moody Church’s Associate Pastor, H.A Hermansen. I want to consider with you an Old Testament story that comprises four chapters of the book of Second Chronicles; and for a  text I would like to read just the first eight verses of the nineteenth chapter. “And Jehoshaphat the king of Judah returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem. And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to the king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord? therefore … Read More >

Mr. Rader’s Anniversary Sermon

About a year ago at this time I was choked with emotion, and now I am choked again. I never will forget the night as long as I live, when I walked into the lecture room of The Moody Church and saw the dear friends gathered there who had elected me pastor of The Moody Church. Nobody on earth was so much surprised as I was. I could not believe it; I could not see how God could take a man who had been what I had been, and allow him to be the pastor of such a Church. But, … Read More >

Should Depictions Of Christ Be Forbidden?

Historically, Christians have proven contentious and confrontational concerning depicting Jesus in any form. Even since the flashpoints of iconoclasm (image/symbol breaking) during the early Middle Ages and the Reformation, the issue has never been completely without debate. We must approach this with an open mind and a respectable degree of tolerance.  Let’s begin by discussing the nature of idolatry in the Scriptures, and why it was consistently condemned. Let us examine Exodus 20:3-5. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the … Read More >

Do Demons Exist And What Are They Like?

Within in the church, and throughout broader society, a great deal of mysticism and superstition surrounds the reality, ability, and work of demons. Because of this haze of opinions, we must root our understanding in Scripture.  The Demonic Narrative Satan is the origin of evil, the father of lies (John 8:44).  Satan and his angels apparently still have access to heaven because during the tribulation period, there will be a war in heaven and they will be cast out unto the earth (Revelation 12:7-9).  Though crushed by the work of Christ two thousand years ago, their final end, eternal punishment, … Read More >

Promises That Never Fail

This past year has been a difficult one and a demanding one for many people. Here we are, starting a new year, and perhaps wondering just what lies before us. It seems that so many things we used to depend on are no longer dependable. The very foundations of life are shaking. How easy it would be to throw up our hands and just give in; but we know that giving up never made any situation better. I think the answer to the problems of life today are found in some of the things that never shake and that never … Read More >

Paid In His Own Coin

Naboth was struck down with stones and dogs licked up his blood, but God was watching in displeasure. He took a hand in the matter and paid the instigator of the crime and all who were connected with him, in their own coin. 1 Kings 21:19 reads: “In the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood.” That was God’s promise to pay. Needless to say it was fulfilled to the letter. In a word, Naboth refused to give up his inherited vineyard to Ahab. Jezebel had Naboth stoned on a charge of blasphemy, so … Read More >

Mixed Marriages

Preface “Bill will attend his church and I’ll go to mine.” “We’ll work it out as we go along.” “We truly love each other, and love conquers all.” These are some of the carefully chosen phrases used to launch a mixed marriage. But actual living proves the statements to be false. The irrefutable fact is that divorce occurs three times as often in mixed [faith] marriages as in marriages between members of the same faith. The thrill of loving and of being loved temporarily minimizes all obstacles to a mixed marriage. The enchanting ecstasy of marriage plans, the flowing beauty … Read More >

A Last Appeal

Dr. H.A. Ironside's Final Sermon as Senior Pastor of The Moody Church
Preached on the Night of His Farewell
Sunday, October 31, 1948 The first book of Kings, chapter 18, verse 21: “And Elijah came unto all the people and said, 'How long halt ye between two opinions? If the Lord be God follow Him, but if Baal, follow him.' And the people answered him not a word.” I am sure that you recall the circumstances under which these words were uttered. You remember that the people of Israel to whom God had given such a wonderful revelation of His … Read More >

Visions, Near-Death & Out-of-Body Experiences

Throughout the world, many have described personal visions and near-death experiences, including conversations with Jesus, meetings with deceased loved ones, and even tours of heaven or hell. Such experiences are possible, but subject to deception and wishful delusions.  God did utilize visions in the Old Testament (Genesis 46:2; Numbers 12:6, 24:16; Psalm 89:19; Daniel 7:1-15; Isaiah 6:1-8), and the New Testament is abundant with examples as well (Acts 11:5, 16:9, 18:9; 2 Corinthians 12:1-4). The prophet Joel even speaks of the expanding frequency of visions in relation to the Day of the Lord (Joel 2:28-32). But visions were not to … Read More >
