Before The Great White Throne
Romans 14:12—“So then each one of us shall give account of himself to God.” Some one is saying now that the preacher is going to give us some death-bed talks—he is going to try to scare us with death. No, I am not. I do not believe so many are afraid of death as they are afraid to meet God. There is not a man or woman in this audience who does not believe that some day he must stand before God and give account of himself, but if you thought you were going to die you would immediately … Read More >

We Persuade Men
“Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men” —2 Corinthians 5:11 Now when God picked out Abraham as the Father of the Faithful, and the one to be the head of His chosen people, the Jews, He took a look at his faith, tested that faith, and found that Abraham would mind Him. Abraham would obey without argument. He picked him, too, as He said, because “I know him, that he will command his children after him.” Abraham’s children had to mind. Has the great truth that you will have to suffer for your disobedience to God ever … Read More >

Is The Doctrine Of Hell Fair?
We at The Moody Church believe in the doctrine of hell—eternal conscious punishment. At the great White Throne (Revelation 20:11ff), billions of human beings will stand before God to hear their judgment. Lacking faith in Jesus Christ, these people will be sentenced to eternal punishment in hell. Obviously this needs explanation. What standard is used in this judgment? Paul taught that those who do not know the Gospel will be judged by their own conscience and by the light gleaned from nature. This judgment will show that no one has lived up to what they intuitively and rationally knew to … Read More >

The Judgments Of Life
Sermon preached by Dr. Harold Lindsell, Sunday, August 9, 1964. Our subject is taken from Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians, chapter four, the first five verses. You may remember the background against which this particular Scripture was written. The Apostle Paul had been a missionary to the city of Corinth, and arising from his missionary endeavors there had been formed a Christian church in that great city. The people of Corinth were a very gifted people, and like all gifted people they were subject to differences of opinions and temptations. As a consequence of the problems which arose in … Read More >

God's Writ Against The World
There is one major controversy between God and mankind. This is just one supreme issue which confronts every one of us. It is brought out into sharp focus in John 3:19: “This is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil.” The issue for which God holds every man and woman responsible is that the One Who came into the world, claiming to be, and proving, indeed, that He was the light of the world, has been rejected. The Revised Version translates the first phrase of the … Read More >

Is Judging Ever Appropriate?
Judging bears a negative connotation among most of the population. When we think about the idea of judging, we conjure up images of heated theological arguments and memories of condescending comments. Also, we remember how “judging” has historically escalated to injustice, tragedy, and violence. But is all judging wrong or sinful? We all judge. Some do more than others, but we all judge. If we know someone who routinely ignores stop signs, our courts would pass judgment. As believers, we repeatedly form and share judgments both small and large throughout each day. It’s a fact of life. The act of … Read More >

Is God Unfair?
The Great White Throne Judgment When Terrified Multitudes Stand Before God Unprepared There is no topic as terrifying as the Great White Throne Judgment…but what do we really know about it? Let’s look at Revelation 20:11-15 together. Who is on this majestic throne? We can be sure that Jesus is sitting on this throne, for God has “committed all judgment unto the Son” (John 5:22). Jesus is now the Judge of all the unredeemed. His throne is great, majestic, and being white, signifies His holy justice and impartiality. Who are the defendants standing in line? John continues, “I saw the … Read More >
