Today’s Reading: John 4:4-26
Today’s Reference: Revelation 22:17 “The Spirit and the Bride say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who hears say, ‘Come.’ And let the one who is thirsty come; let the one who desires take the water of life without price.”
“I thirst.”
The One who called Himself the Living Water is thirsty—what irony! Jesus has given up the privileges of deity to drink the “cup of wrath” prepared for Him at full strength. He would do no miracle here to spare Himself one tiny bit of punishment for our sins.
But I think this was more than physical thirst. We’re all born with an emptiness inside that can only be filled by God. The Bible often compares it to thirst. For the first time in His life—the first and only time in eternity—Jesus is separated from God and feels that longing. He thirsts.
Our world offers us so many vain ways to satisfy that emptiness we’ve all felt. Take a good, hard look at your life today. Have you tried to fill your longing with security, money, human love, or anything other than God? What has it cost you in pain and disappointment? Turn back and drink freely from the well of Living Water!
Prayer:
Father, I know only You can truly quench my soul’s thirst. Help me put aside the other things I once thought would fill me up and concentrate on being filled by You.
In Jesus’ name, amen.
