Alcohol

The Bible bluntly prohibits a number of perverse behaviors, among them is the sin of drunkenness. In Galatians 5:19-21, Paul groups this sin with some terrible company. As believers who recognize drunkenness as an outworking of our flesh, we ought to avoid it with fervency. For some believers, total abstinence is wise and the best course of action. Those who have seen the destruction that alcohol has wrought within their families often rightly shun all association with it. Furthermore, the only sure way to never become an alcoholic is to choose to not drink.
For other believers, drinking in moderation is a normal expression of Christian freedom. The Scriptures never prohibit the drinking of alcohol itself (Deuteronomy 14:26, Psalms 104:14-15, 1 Timothy 5:23).
Let us be wary of legalism on one hand, and license on the other. We must allow for freedom of conscience. We are to act as conscience allows without offending other believers who are present (Romans 14:20-21). Legalism is denounced in Colossians 2:20-23.
Remember the famous verses in Proverbs 23:29-35 concerning drunkenness! These warnings are for the benefit of those who have not yet begun to drink. No, the Bible does not teach abstinence, so we cannot judge those who drink their glass of wine, but there is only one way to be sure that we never fall into the sin of alcoholism: simply refuse to begin drinking.
