“The dragon stood before the woman,…to devour her child.”—Revelation 12:4
This attitude on the part of Satan indicates persistent, relentless and aggressive opposition to the purposes of God in human redemption, to be accomplished through the seed of the woman.
May we go back to the third chapter of Genesis, where the great conflict of the ages begins, and read a few verses.
“Now the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said unto the woman. Yea, hath God said, Ye shall not eat of every tree of …
The question I am to answer, submitted by a listener, is as follows: “Why do you preach a gospel of works? You say an unsaved man must turn from sin, completely give himself over to Christ, and then receive Him by faith as Lord and Saviour. Please give scriptural truth.”
We will take as our basis James 2:14-26. I think it is essential, judging by this question, that we make perfectly clear what the Bible teaches about saving faith in the Lord Jesus. What does it mean to be saved, to believe in Him?
During the Napoleon wars there met one night on a raft in the middle of a German river the emperors of France and Russia for a conference, the result of which was to change the map of Europe. But centuries before there was a far greater conference. It was between Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews, and Jesus Christ, the Son of God. The result of this conference was to change the fate of countless thousands of human souls.
It was no mere accident that the kind of a man that he was, …
In this nineteenth Psalm, the Spirit of God celebrates two things,—draws our attention to two testimonies. First, in verses 1 to 6 we have the testimony to the majesty and power of God in creation. Then from verses 7 to 11 we have the testimony of the Word of God setting forth the divine purpose and counsels, making known the mind of God in respect to man. In verses 12 to 14 we have that exercise of soul which should result from a thoughtful consideration of these two testimonies.
There is no conflict whatever between the testimony of nature and …
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”—1 Corinthians 1:18
The word of the Cross is to them that are going to perdition an absurdity, but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God. I want to speak to you about the message of the Cross. Do not think that those words were spoken by a man at random, under the strain of irritating circumstances.
Paul always wrote his epistles with clearness of expression and with deep conviction, without any …
All of us need encouragement at one time or another. Sometimes we become discouraged with circumstances, or with the people we have to work or live with; and sometimes we even become discouraged with ourselves. Jesus Christ is the “Great Encourager.” During His ministry here on Earth, He never became discouraged no matter how difficult the situation became. Isaiah 42:4 says of Jesus, “He shall not fail nor be discouraged…” Because He was never discouraged, He is able to encourage you and me.
Several times we hear Jesus saying, “Be of good cheer!” Literally, this greeting means, “Take heart! Don’t …
“And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.
“And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.
“And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy.”
There was one thing that the Master began on Earth that He never finished. He began to pronounce a benediction, and before that benediction was completed He was carried up into Heaven. The first thing He might do when He returns would be complete that unfinished blessing. “Unto them that look …
In the early part of this chapter, Paul has been opening his heart about the Christian ministry, as he spoke of a ministry of revelation he had received because “God had shined in his heart, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.” Because of that character of ministry he was under a very deep sense of responsibility to communicate it to others. Therefore, “we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus our Lord, and ourselves your servants for His sake.” And in order that there might be through him a …
“He came unto his own, and his own received him not. “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His name;
“Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”—John 1:11-13
Some folks talk about being adopted into the family, but thank God, I was born into it. In the world when you want to receive some one into your family that was not born into it, you have got to …
This subject was suggested to me when Mr. Johnson and Mr. Woolley came home from Canada. Mr. Woolley needed a vacation very badly, so he took one of twenty-four hours. I don’t know how many pounds he gained, but I gained a lot of information myself. Woolley tells me everything he knows, and then I preach.
He told me how one of the boys there in Canada who had gone to the front had written his mother that there was no “V.C.” blood in him. His duty was to carry ammunition along a certain road, and he wrote that the …
