In this series of Psalms the holiness of God in grace and in judgment is specially emphasized. That is something I think we should all understand clearly. Everything that God does or everything that He permits is in accordance with His own holy nature. God will not allow anything either in the way of grace to sinners or in the way of trial to His people or in the way of judgment falling upon the ungodly that is contrary to the holiness of His nature. Only today somebody said to me, “I do not believe in the God of the …
“Now as He walked by the sea of Galilee, He saw Simon and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishers. And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men. And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed Him.”—Mark 1:16–18
The opening part of the chapter talks of things that happened to our Lord immediately preceding the opening of His public ministry. He was identified with the Father in heaven in all His purposes for men. He was baptized identifying Himself with the sin …
Text: Acts 10:44, “The Holy Spirit fell on all them which heard the word.”
You know that Pentecost, as far as the day is concerned, was a sacred Jewish feast day. It was the feast of the “first fruits,” and was second only in importance to the Feast of the Passover, but to the Christian it is sacred for quite another reason. We commemorate that day because it is the birthday of the Christian Church. There was no church prior to the day of Pentecost. The first reference to the Church is found in Matthew 16:18. Jesus there promised that …
The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. Let us walk honestly as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering and wantonness, not in strife and envying. But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfill the lusts thereof” (Romans 13:12–14).
The early days of the present church age were characterized by the danger of falling away from the grace of God which brought salvation through simple faith …
We have been noticing in studying this book how very frequently a number of Psalms are intimately linked together. Beginning with Psalm 25 and going on through Psalm 39 we have a little group of fifteen Psalms all of which deal with the same general subject, that is, the spiritual exercises of the people of God, particularly the coming remnant of Israel in the days of the great tribulation, but also the exercises that the people of God in general pass through in this world while waiting for the coming again of our Lord Jesus Christ.
“He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto Him, Thou art the Christ.”—Mark 8:29
I would like you to observe first in the latter part of Mark 8 that here at the conclusion of the chapter we have a most unfortunate King James’ version chapter division. The Revised Version helps a bit by putting these divisions in paragraphs. The first verse of chapter 9 is really part of chapter 8, and indeed is the climax to it all: “He said unto them, Verily, I say unto you, That there be …
After reading the account of the resurrection of Christ found in the sixteenth chapter of the Gospel by St. Mark, Mr. Moody said:
A good many people seem to think that Christ’s resurrection was only a spiritual matter, and that His body laid in the grave and became food for worms, just like any other dead body. But the Gospels are very full and plain on this point. Not less than forty-two times is this blessed doctrine spoken of by Christ Himself before His death, as well as by His disciples afterward. In Matthew 16:21, we find, “From that time …
Great truths that are stumbling-blocks to the natural man are nevertheless the very foundations upon which the confidence of the spiritual man is built, for “faith gives the assurance of that for which we hope, and convinces us of the reality of the unseen.” Of course, this is only true when our hopes are based upon the testimony of the Word of God.
That Word is forever settled in heaven, and, like God who gave it, the Word is unshakable. Men may cavil or quibble regarding its teachings, but “what if some did not believe? Shall their unbelief make the …
“Wherefore, come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you...”—2 Corinthians 6:17
I am sure that a minister never appears in so forbidding a form, especially to young people, as he does when he comes to deal with this subject of separation, and with the relationship of the Christian to the world in which we live, and many folks are almost ready to account him an enemy of their happiness, and call him a kind of promoter of gloom and misery. Immediately they will put …
“The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge.”
These words you notice in reading the 46th Psalm, make up both the seventh and the eleventh verses and we could well call them the chorus of the psalm. I want to talk to you this morning about this beautiful chorus.
In this time in which we live, strange things are happening—things that men cannot understand and men cannot fathom; not very strange as far as war is concerned, for war is old, but there are stranger things happening in society, there are fine old standards …
