“And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” —1 Thessalonians 5:23
“And the very God of peace”—He is the Lord of hosts, He is the God of creation, He is the God of love; and this verse says that He is the “very God of peace.”
There is no wrangle in heaven, Hallelujah. There is no misunderstanding in heaven, there is no friction in heaven—He is the very God of peace. As surely as when there is …
Over and over, deeper and deeper, do we have to learn the meaning of God’s words, until the faint perceptions we first had of them seem as dewdrops compared with the fathomless ocean we find in them at the last.
“And he was left alone, and there wrestled a man with him until the break of day.”
All elect souls pass many times this station of aloneness with God, and they find that the wrestling always lasts till the breaking of the day.
We have to be alone with God in finding personal salvation. Others may be used as instruments …
“Simon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to them that have obtained like precious faith with us through the righteousness of God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord.”
Sometimes God adds, and sometimes He multiplies. Grace and peace are always multiplied.
“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness.”
“Hath given unto us”—we do not have to work for them.
“through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and …
Preached at the Sunday Morning Service of The Moody Church on February 8, 1953.
What is real, genuine Christian experience?
I might take an example from any chapter of the book of Philippians which would give us the secret of Christian experience. I could take chapter 1, verses 20 and 21: “So now also Christ shall be magnified in my body, whether it be by life, or by death. For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”
I know we generally quote that as “for me to live is Christ,” but it is really, “for me …
“Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you.”—Matthew 6:33
We hear much these days about priorities. A few months ago the word was rarely ever used. To many it was comparatively unknown. The war has brought several new words into common usage which formerly had no particular appeal. It was so in connection with the last war. I recall very well being a witness in a law suit involving a will which was protested by the other side as a forgery. It was supposed to be an instrument conveying …
We have often been reminded that the four Gospel accounts, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John present four different aspects of the character and ministry of our Lord Jesus Christ. In Matthew, which was written with special emphasis for the Jew, He is seen as the King of Israel. The genealogy of the first Gospel takes us to David and Abraham to prove His right to the throne. In Mark’s Gospel there is no genealogy as there Christ is set forth as the Servant of Jehovah. A servant would have no genealogy! “Straightway, immediately, forthwith” and “anon” are the words that …
“Be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable and perfect, will of God.”—Romans 12:2
Now, here’s an exact mathematical proposition, where you can get the answer and prove it. “Be not conformed to this world.” He tells you how—“by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good, and acceptable and perfect, will of God.”
The artist that is drawing a good picture refers very often to the model. Here is a man painting a mountain scene, so …
“And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, Make thee two trumpets of silver: of a whole piece shalt thou make them.”—Numbers 10:1–2
What is it that we need first and most, if the months that lie ahead of us, if the Lord will, are to be fruitful in the things that are pleasing to God? How are we to fulfill the relationship of life, and in them adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things? What is it that lies at the basis of all spiritual life and service, and without which we can only fail in every …
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”—Psalm 30:5
It is noteworthy that the Word of God has much to say about weeping—about the matter of tears. You would be a very unusual person indeed if you had never shed a tear, because tears stain the faces of folk in every clime, in every age.
There is a certain eloquence to tears. Nor are they necessarily an indication of weakness. Visualize, if you will, the iron Napoleon as he witnessed his seemingly interminable troops marching into the Prussian campaign. Sparkling emotion became liquid on his cheeks. …

HE MEETS HIS FATE CALMLY
When the End Was Near He Said: “The World is Receding and Heaven Opening”
East Northfield, Mass., December 22, 1899—With the words “God is calling me,” Dwight L. Moody, the Evangelist, died at his home here at noon to-day. His passing was as gentle as could be wished for. His family were gathered at his bedside, and the dying man’s last moments were spent in comforting them. Besides the family there were present also …
